Dolby Atmos

Dolby, the company that brought you surround sound as we know it today (Dolby Digital, Dolby TrueHD, etc.) has engineered the newest format in surround sound, coined “Atmos”. Atmos is a new surround sound format that allows filmmakers and sound engineers to provide a new listening experience for movie watchers.

Atmos will augment your standard surround sound formats – most commonly referred to as “5.1” or “7.1” – and add ceiling positioned speakers. With these additional, often referred to as “voice of God” speakers, additional layers of audio can be added to the movie audio track, allowing for seamless transitions of sound between your standard front, side and rear speakers. When something passes overhead in a movie, Atmos will now allow you to actually experience that object flying overhead, where previously there would be an empty transition from front to back or side to side.

Like all new technology, you will need a surround sound receiver / amplifier capable of “decoding” (understanding) these new Atmos audio tracks. Do not worry – your existing equipment is not obsolete but maybe now you have a reason to upgrade!

If you are planning a remodel project or building a new home, it is very important to plan on wiring for Dolby Atmos, as it is here to stay and will take your movie watching experience to the next level! Feel free to Contact Us if you have questions on how to best implement this new technology!
